Machines outlive their documentation. Parts get substituted, retrofits get done, and the record slowly stops describing the thing in front of you. We rebuild the record.
// twenty years of changes, one parts list
Knowing what is actually in a machine that has been running for twenty years
The parts list describes the machine that left the factory
A service technician arrives at a machine built in 2006. Since then it has had three retrofits, two component substitutions, and a repair done with whatever was on the shelf. The parts list in the system describes the machine that left the factory, not the one in front of him. So he brings the wrong part, or spends the visit working out what he is looking at.
What we build: an as-maintained parts list per serial number — the original build plus every change order, service report and substitution since — so the technician knows before he drives out.
What it is worth: fewer second visits, shorter downtime for your customer, and better spare parts revenue. You can only sell the right part if you know which one it is.
The record diverges in more than one place
Supplier and material data
The same bolt under three descriptions, from two suppliers, at different prices. Price lists arrive as PDFs and get typed in by hand, so negotiated discounts quietly stop being applied. One clean supplier and material record makes the gap between contract price and invoice price visible — and that gap is usually money you already agreed to keep.
Drawings, changes and the reason behind them
The last variant of a part exists in a PDM system, an email thread, and a badly named folder. So it gets redesigned and gets a second number, and now two part numbers describe one part. Search that understands part numbers and machine types means what already exists gets found and reused.
Problems we see
- As-built documentation that stopped matching reality years ago.
- Sensor and quality data collected diligently and read by nobody.
- Part-number growth that carries stocking, purchasing and documentation cost forever.
- Engineering knowledge that leaves when the person who held it does.
Does your parts list still describe your machines?
